Munich Creative Business Week 2019: Understanding Artificial Intelligence, Developing Your Own Robots

The 8th MUNICH CREATIVE BUSINESS WEEK (MCBW) – which will take place from 9th to 17th March – opens up new perspectives on design and socially relevant topics. This year, the MCBW will focus on artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics: the interested public can follow various workshops and lectures on this topic. The MCBW is Germany’s largest design week (78,000 visitors in 2018) and is organised by bayern design GmbH, the competence centre for design of the Free State of Bavaria.

Call for applications for Munich Design Week MCBW 2019 starts: of Cockatoos and Cups …

Munich, July 20, 2018 | As of today, applicants are invited to submit their applications as potential partners of 8th MUNICH CREATIVE BUSINESS WEEK (MCBW) taking place from March 9-17, 2019. To mark the occasion, the key visual illustrating the theme of the upcoming edition “Design Connects” was unveiled.  Companies, organisations and institutions interested in partaking in Germany’s biggest design event can register on the updated website until October 21, 2018.

“MCBW’s guiding theme “Design Connects” illustrates both lifestyle and culture of Munich and Bavaria in a unique manner. It is also representative of the exceptional synergy of design and business. Design connects – people with people, people with technology, analogous with digital worlds, aesthetics with function and the practical with the sensual. Design expertise is the foundation for and an integral part of innovation. Design creates identities, promotes communication, offers ways of orientation in an increasingly complex world – both on a regional and global scale,” said Dr. Silke Claus, CEO of bayern design, organiser of MCBW. “And this is also the way to read the new key visual, which cheekily combines several opposites to form a surprising union of nature and culture, serially produced item and unique being – formal rigidity meets vibrant, wild beauty.”

For nine days, Germany’s biggest design event will showcase the creative hub Bavaria and present its lively, enjoyable and future-oriented capital of design. In March 2018, MCBW’s previous edition featured over 250 events by more than 200 partners. Host to more than 75,000 visitors, the two sectors CREATE BUSINESS! and DESIGN SCHAU! targeted expert audiences and design aficionados respectively and provided in-depth knowledge as well as inspiring design experiences.

Design will come alive at MCBW’s CREATE BUSINESS! sector: design functions as an impulse for innovation, which will be made visible to visitors who can also experience how an active design process helps give change a more human dimension. Big ideas, sustainable trends and new products will be presented at the many conferences, symposia, workshops, receptions and countless other events. MCBW will be your occasion to network; it is an event where the making of professional contacts will be promoted as much as the transfer of in-depth knowledge and lively debate. It is an exchange of corporate world and designers on the one hand and creative disciplines such as design, marketing and architecture on the other.
MCBW START UP creates a platform for investors to connect with young entrepreneurs. To this end, workshops, coaching sessions, lectures and personal meetings will be on offer. Studio Night, the highlight of MCBW START UP, will be an opportunity for founders to present their ideas to the critical public and create their professional network with experts.

At DESIGN SCHAU!, design aficionados will be invited to experience, examine and explore the many-faceted aspects of design. Visitors can choose from a wide range of exhibitions, vernissages, events and activities to discover both German and international cultures of design at more than 100 venues across Munich and Bavaria. Come and explore the multifaceted creative hubs in and around Munich!

Summit meeting in Milan: The ein&zwanzig jury selects the Best of Best

The ein&zwanzig (“Twenty-one”) awards were presented this evening on the occasion of Milan Design Week 2018 in Zona Tortona. The 21 most innovative product and project ideas of talented international up-and-coming designers received this prestigious accolade. The climax of the event was the awarding of the Best of Best prize, which went to Berlin-based Sofia Souidi for the design of her Gradient lamp. All of the winning projects will be on view at the ein&zwanzig exhibition in Milan, from 17-22 April.
Nature as a source of inspiration
Sofia Souidi received the Best of Best award for her Gradient lamp. She recently received a master’s degree in product design from the Royal College of Art in London and is now living in Berlin. The inspiration for her submission was natural sunlight whose colour and intensity according to the time of day, the weather and the environment. Souidi’s Gradient lamp takes its cue from these changes, in that it changes colour from time to time and the intensity of the light varies according to the amount of incident sunlight. Souidi’s goal was to create a bridge between the exterior world and interior spaces, and to address the question of how, in this age of mega-cities, people can feel a connection with nature.
A much sought-after award for young designers
The international attention and prestige attached to the ein&zwanzig awards is demonstrated by the response it attracted: 736 works from 60 countries covering the fields of design and lifestyle were submitted – 30 percent more than in the previous year. The 21 prize-winners were selected by a high-calibre international jury from the worlds of design and industry including luminaries such as Konstantin Grcic, Stefano Giovannoni, Philipp Mainzer and Stephen Burks.
“This year we were particularly drawn to projects that developed a completely new concept based on traditional technologies” said Andrej Kupetz, chairman of the jury and executive director of the German Design Council.
For further information visit
The prize winning International Newcomers projects will be on view from 17-22 April at Via Tortona 31 in Milan. The exhibition will be open from 10 am to 5 pm on 17 April, and from 10 am to 9 pm from 18-22 April.

Mattiazzi is well known for linking high-tech production facilities with traditional craftsmanship and also for its careful selection of the varieties of wood and materials it works with.

Presentation Inga Sempé, April 18, 11:00 am

Inga Sempé represents a new collaboration for Mattiazzi with MC17 by showcasing her latest design Bienvenue. Sempé explains the story behind this upholstered chair: “Bienvenue is an upholstered chair for contract sales. Its padding makes it comfortable to sit on for long periods and its low, rounded armrests allow it to slide easily under the table. The idea behind Bienvenue is cushioning, which, instead of resting on the chair, is actually part of its structure. With this in mind, the wooden structure is made up of a multi-ply frame supported by solid ash legs. The back legs are built into the frame, from the base to the top. Milling parallel to the uprights allows the cushioning to become part of the frame: from the front, the fabric disappears to reveal ash uprights in the padded backrest. From the back, the top of the uprights are sheathed in the padding that surrounds them. The corolla of the frame is crowned by a cylinder of coated foam, providing support for the back that is smooth to the touch. Bienvenue is available in three colors – natural, gray, and black. The padding can be made in just one fabric or divided into several distinct parts: the corolla, the seat, and the backrest.”

The collection MC16 Forcina by Leon Ransmeier comprises a chair, an armchair, and a stool with a steel frame, a wooden seat, and a backrest. The collection is rounded off with a table. In Ransmeier’s own words: “The Italian word forcina means ‘hairpin’ in English. The Forcina collection has a pragmatic feminine character. From the outset, it was considered within the context of a café or a restaurant. Historically, café chairs often have a curvilinear form influenced perhaps by the iconic history of Viennese café furniture or the sweetness of the pastries served there. The shape of Forcina’s solid wooden seat and backrest echo the comfortably sculpted surfaces on the top of the seat and the front of the backrest. The stainless-steel frames are CNC-bent and enable efficient manufacturing with few parts and minimal welding. The frame reaches beyond the backrest and, like the hairpin, offers easy handling. The collection includes chairs, armchairs, square and round tables, low stools, and barstools. All items are available in natural oak, natural ash, or black stained ash. The frames come either in a blasted stainless-steel or a black lacquered finish.”

The new designs are also completed with the Primo stool, an addition of MC14 collection by Konstantin Grcic, and the artistically shaped pillow Quindici designed by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec for the MC15 collection and which was already presented at the Stockholm Furniture Fair.

Christian Fischbacher is inspired by Japanese design for his textile design

The new décor, wallpaper and bedding collections of the textile design company Christian Fischbacher are also an expression of a Japanese design tradition. On the one hand, this is due to the appeal of Japanese forms on the modern design world. On the other hand, the strong bond to Japan in the family business was established decades ago and passed on from generation to generation. The subsidiary has existed since 1971. The Japanese market is the single-source market with the highest turnover for Christian Fischbacher. And Camilla and Michael Fischbacher lived with their family in Japan for five years.

In the presence of Piero Lissoni, the grand opening of the design hotel Roomers in Baden-Baden took place on 10 November 2016.

Piero Lissoni at DMY International Design Festival 2015 in Berlin

Architect and designer Piero Lissoni is part of this year’s DMY International Design Festival in Berlin. At the day for professional visitors, June 11th 2015, Lissoni will conduct a conversation with Andreas Tölke, freelance journalist for design, about the topic “Global Brand Building Vs. Heritage”.

In this context, Piero Lissoni will present a selection of his worldwide architectural projects and design highlights: In each case, they represent personal interpretations between the poles of an engagement with the Italian modernism and a continuous search for contemporary design. Adequately, in 2015 the motto of DMY Festival is “Back to the Future”, questioning the direction of contemporary design attitude: Will it move back to the roots or forward to design innovation?

The DMY International Design Festival Berlin is the most important non-subsidized event in the field of product design in Germany. The event with exhibition and extensive program is on show at Kraftwerk Mitte, Köpenicker Straße 70 in Berlin from June 11-14, 2015.

Bolon showcases new collection Flow at Salone del Mobile

Inspired by the timeless mystery of our oceans, the new collection Flow celebrates design fluidity, visual motion, and soft pastel shades. This is partly achieved by the use of a transparent warp that allows the weave’s subtle colours to shine through. The fact that every article in the collection can be easily combined without adhering to strict pattern based laying makes it amazingly versatile.

As well as making the collection available in rolls and tiles, the company is using the launch of Flow to introduce its new tile shape, ‘Scale’. Celebrating the natural, glistening beauty within the ocean, it is the company’s first organic tile shape which features a soft, rounded form, opening up new possibilities for individual flooring concepts.

From a sustainability perspective, Flow is a breakthrough collection. The bottom layer of the flooring’s backing is made of recycled material from Bolon’s recently commissioned onsite recycling plant – a process that results in the end product comprising up to 33% recycled material. This recent development is the latest expression in a long history of environmental innovation.

First Blogger Meeting at Vitsoe Munich – creative remake of a design classic

Following an invitation of hicklvesting PR a dozen bloggers of the design scene met at Vitsoe Munich in July 2013. What was requested was the creativity of the participants: They were asked to create their own individual Vitsoe shelve and to furnish with their personal props. The aim was to lively experience the system produced according to the original furniture designs of the industrial designer Dieter Rams. The young creatives brought extraordinary and extravagant home accessories with them – from wooden dolls to fossilized puffer fishes. They started their work with elan and a wealth of ideas and thus formed totally different interiors. This was made possible by the flexibility of the system: It’s the user’s decision to utilize a board as shelf or as magnetic panel. The many publications show that the bloggers intensively thought about the system and understood the Vitsoe philosophy: living better with less that lasts longer.
